1. Wellbore Stability and Wall Building Specialized additives in drilling fluids help form a thin, low-permeability filter cake on the borehole wall, which stabilizes weak or reactive formations and prevents sloughing or collapse.
2. Cuttings Transport and Hole Cleaning One of the most important functions of drilling mud is to carry drill cuttings (rock fragments) to the surface. Proper rheology and density, adjusted with viscosifiers and weighting agents, ensure effective removal of cuttings and prevent accumulation around the drill bit or in the annulus.
3. Bit Cooling and Lubrication Drilling generates intense heat and friction. Drilling fluids help dissipate this heat, reduce bit wear, and lubricate the drill string, contributing to longer tool life and smoother operations.
4. Pressure Control and Blowout Prevention By balancing formation pressures with hydrostatic pressure, drilling fluids prevent formation fluid influx and reduce the risk of well control events such as kicks or blowouts. Loss circulation materials (LCMs) are also added to prevent fluid losses into fractured or porous formations.
